AllState Appliances Repair, Stove/oven repair. $350 for ABoys (SF) to fix my broken oven ignitor. The person indicated the work would only take 10 or 20 mns at most but labor is charged as a flat fee thus the price. I actually had 2 issues with my stove/oven and each would be billed as a flat fee for a total in excess of $550. Cole referred me to AllState Appliances Repair: $184 (Fossier)
Apple Appliance (Vintage stoves), tel (510) 420-8096. The owner (John?) came out to Glen Park and tuned up my 50+ year-old Wedgewood, it's working better than most modern stoves I've used! They really know the older stoves, and can do re-chroming, new enamel, complete rebuilds, etc.
Bobs Appliance Repair, 239-2800 (Ocean Ave). Bob Lee is owner, does FANTASTIC work at reasonable prices!!! He has been doing repair jobs for me AND my HERTH real Estate clients for 10 years, gets RAVE reviews!!! (Beaudet, realtor)

I have a great Arborist to recommend. He pruned a couple trees for us
and some for our neighbor (also in Glen Park) and we both were extremely
pleased with his work. He is also an incredibly pleasant person to work with.
Here's his info: Jacob Claasen 415-624-9352
Jonno (sounds like John-oh) Campo is great. His company has a name like
California Tree Service or Company. Unfortunately, that's all we can remember.
We met him years ago when we were planting trees in our neighborhood with
Friends of the Urban Forest. We hired Jonno to trim huge trees in the backyard,
and he was wonderful. He's reliable, friendly, resourceful (we had to trim
large eucalyptus branches from our extremely difficult neighbor's tree that
extended over our entire yard [she, not the tree, was a nightmare!] without
crossing her property line). I'll send more contact info if I can find it. We
have recommeded Jonno to friends in the City and down the Peninsula, and we've
heard nothing but positive feedback from them. His prices were also quite resonable.

Andy Forrest. His office is located on Taraval.
Larry Friesen, on our home expansion. We're big Larry fans. You can reach him at (415)642-5520
We interviewed several architects and went with Maniscalco Architecture. We really liked working with him and his staff. We didn't go all the way through construction but would recommend him anyway.
I'd highly recommend Cassandra Mettling-Davis of CMD Architecture. 664.3400. Her office is in Miraloma Park and she's done several home remodels in the general area. She's a sole architect and primarily does residential work. We're just wrapping up a major remodel that she did for us. She was very creative, easy to work with, and really took into account what we wanted.
We love our architect. Steven Whitney 415-469-9052
Felix Rodriguez at Garcia -Wagner & Associates would be a great start. Felix and I are in a business networking group and he and his team are friendly, professional and extremely thorough. http://www.gwa-arch.com/
Healthy Choice Carpet Cleaners has cleaned our carpets, rugs, and couches for years. They're all natural and run by the hardest-working guy I have ever encountered - John. They will clean at your house with no chemicals.
You might try and see if Healthy Choice Carpet Cleaners can clean the chairs in the house (or out of the house) without chemicals. I had them clean some area rugs and a sofa in the house and they did a very good job. I don't think they use any chemicals, or at the very least significantly less chemicals than traditional carpet and upholstery cleaners. I was in the house during the cleaning and it did not bother my allergies at all and most cleaning products do.

AAA Quality Chimney (650)589-5119. We redid our inner-lower chimney. They did a reline and added a damper where there was previously none...They seemed to do a good job and were responsive. I think they'll do an inspection and rebate the inspection cost if you hire them for more work. They were accommodating because I had to make the final appointment on a moments notice....
We used London Chimney Services - Darren Brennan was the main contact. I found this company on the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) site <http://www.csia.org/>. Apparently, this organization certfies sweeps and London Chimney was the only one within the 415 area code. I also found the site informative and filled with facts. I would recommend reading the Home section Hot Topics. (Gearty)
London Chimney Service, 383.8227, Londonchimney.com I used them – very efficient, very happy with them. Found them in an article in the Wall Street Journal

muscle and bone, she can read Xrays (maybe they all can), she understands. Her

of that ended after about two sessions. She has many different kinds of
patients and more than a few techniques. You can reach her at: 920-9766.

I can't recommend Ann Hood highly enough. She's
located on 24th and Sanchez in Noe Valley, 415-821-2100. She is also a physical
therapist, so has particular insight into exercises, etc. geared toward
repairing one's ailing body that can be used in conjunction with chiropractic
adjustments. She is also very conservative in her approach, which I appreciate.
Finally, when I was mugged last May, she was invaluable, both in her services
to me and in her referral of me to a chiropractic neurologist whom she believed
(and I think rightly so) would be more equipped to deal with the head trauma I
suffered, resulting in balance issues. She really looks out for her patients.
Plus, she's a mom of two girls, so understands the bizarre contortions parents
can end up in resulting in strains and other assorted body aches!
I didn't want to miss a chance to recommend Ann Hood on 24th Street near Sanchez (near Martha's & across from the cheese store). I was in a bad situation with workers compensation doctors at St Luke's for about six months because of pain in my hands and arms – lots of painkillers, traction, physical therapy, etc. The doctors were recommending carpal tunnel surgery for my wrists and I had the good fortune to pay Ann a visit before they had their chance. Turned out the pain was due to nerves compressed in my neck – and within a month the chronic pain was gone. She is great at her profession, and a really great person. Her number is 821-2100. BTW – for chiropractic skeptics out there – Ann has great integrity and she has a strong practice – so if she doesn't think she can help your situation, she will be very honest about it. I've seen her turn people away or refer people if they need something else.
Karen Montalbano on Irving is really good, cross st is 11th Ave. We went to her for years, she is a great lady.
Closet redesign.
THE CONTAINER STORE:
If you can take accurate measurements inside your closet, they will work with you to plan the closet space. The elfa shelving is not the least expensive you will find but it is pretty easy to install. I used a local handy man to do the hanging and installing (he was less expensive than the installation cost charged by the store.
We used the Container Store (they have an Elfa sale once or twice a year). It has worked well for us. My husband installed it, though; I'm not sure if they offer installation.
For our smaller closets we went to the Container store, they help you design and the closets are really easy to put together yourself – and more cost effective. For our larger master bedroom closet we used Closet Factory, Darryl was the sales person and he was very good – you need to negotiate with them however.
We redid all the closets in our house via the container store. It's a little more work for you, but immensely cheaper than having someone do it, and it truly is simple. If you have the dimensions of the closet, you go to the store, they map it out on the computer, and you tell them exactly what you want in the space (e.g. drawers, shelves, etc). They design it, give you all the materials, and tell you how to install. I'm not handy at all, and I was able to put in the stuff for full size walk-in closets. We love them. You do need someone to drill a hole. Anyway, just a thought....I know sometimes it's just easier to have someone do it all, and we did this before our twins were born.
We had four closets and a home office installed by California Closets. The design process was painless, and the installers were very diligent and neat. We worked with designer Abbe Miller. 415-258-4459.
We used California Closets in our master bedroom. Although the closet itself is good, our 'design consultant' initially mismeasured by about 9" (nine inches!), which drew rolling of the eyes and sighing by the person who actually did the installation. And overall, we are having to live with about an inch of dead space -- not much in the scope of the world, but not the way the product should end up. They did agree to rectify the situation by adding more of some pull-out shelves I had ordered. That made it sort of ok. However, moral of the story is to have your own tape measure handy, check and recheck the consultant's calculations. Knowing exactly what you need is also helpful. For what it's worth, I have heard fantastic reviews of California Closet. So, I'm sure at least a little of this experience is dependent on the consultant who shows up.
We used California closets and very happy with their work. their modules style helped us
maximize space for clothes and toys! (http://www.californiaclosets.com/).
We had our closets designed by "Closets By Design". there are many others in the market like Closet World, California Closets etc. Almost all of them offer similar products. My suggestion would be to call each one of them for a free design consultation and then compare their quotes and designs. Keep in mind that the price they will quote initially is marked up quite a bit to accomodate for discounts ... so bargain, bargain, bargain!
The dry cleaner on the corner of Diamond and Chenery I think does a great job.
I don't know about "great," but my husband has been happily going to the dry cleaners on the corner of Chenery and Diamond for years.
The dry cleaner next to tower market is good, and they are a "green" cleaner so they are not using toxic dry cleaning chemicals.
I like the cleaners next to Mollie Stones / Tower, Miraloma cleaners. They are environmentally friendly, they may be considered a bit pricer, but they are very nice and professional. They also give you a print out with price before they take the clothes, which not many places do. (I'm sure you have heard the rumors that some cleaners will charge a women more than a man for the same button up shirt! especially when they don't list the prices in advance)
We have been using the drycleaners next to Tower Burger for about 8 yrs now. We have not had any problems yet!
Jenny at Martinelli's Cleaners on the corner of Monterey at Forester is great. She does good tailoring too.
On Monterey at Forester. It is the place adjacent to Monterey Auto Service (NOT the one closer to the Safeway). She's been good to us since 1999!
We've used Clean N Save (a block up from the Glen Park BART station) for years now. The prices are good and we've never had any problems. They also have 2 parking spaces right in front for easy drop off and pick-up.
Rebecca at diamond heights cleaners is great. i bring all my pucci and prada there.
I usually end up with the dry cleaner on the corner of Bosworth and Brompton. These guys are ok for general cleaning. Their prices are reasonable and they are quite friendly. However, if you're looking for top-quality dry cleaning, there's really only one choice - Peninou. They're expensive, but they provide an extremely professional service. They pick up and drop off and are an eco-friendly business. Personally, I mix it up and take the majority of my stuff to the Bosworth cleaner & save a few specific items for Peninou. Here's a link to Peninou: http://www.peninou.com/

We've had wonderful service and work from House Painter, Craig Harter, Phone 415/637-0550 (Maerzke)
Be sure you know who's going to actually do the work. I hired a guy who could paint and was grownup... could be trusted to do careful work with my back turned. He, however, hired a kid who couldn't paint and wasn't trustworthy. It was bad, culminating in the kid turning a bucket of turpentine and water over into my yard, which took lots of labor (someone else worked, I paid) to clear away, and I was afraid to grow anything there for several years. If you choose someone unlicensed send (the list moderator) the name before you sign a contract; if it's the person who skunked me I'll let you know right away. I'm still reeling from the bad experience. (Clemens)

House sitting and pet sitting category:
We heartily recommend Reagen Cookson for any of your house-sitting and pet-sitting needs. He is experienced, friendly, thoroughly reliable and trustworthy, and has very reasonable rates! Reagen has lived with us in our in-law unit at 486 Laidley Street in Glen Park for several years and can be reached day or evening at 415-334-9689 (cell phone is 415-596-7148). (Prag and Collins)
My family was here a few years ago and they stayed at Cathedral Hill Hotel (415-776-8200) on Van Ness & Geary. It was easy for them to get to Union Square, Japantown, Ocean Beach on bus 38. Their rate was reasonable back then.
There is another boutique hotel by Union Square called Chancellor Hotel right on Powell. I usually get better rate by calling them instead of making a reservation online. Their phone # is 415-362-2004 or 800-428-4748.
I can also recommend Holiday Inn by Fisherman's Wharf, 415-409-4600.
The Hotel Adagio downtown is great. My in-laws have stayed there twice. The rooms are really nice and you can usually get a great rate at orbitz.com. And the restaurant, Cortez, is quite good.
We had people stay at the Hotel Vintage Court when they came into town for our wedding. http://vintagecourt.com/ Those who stayed there really liked it. It's more of a boutique hotel than most and close enough to downtown to make guests feel like they're in the heart of it. Check it out. It also has a world-class restaurant on the first floor - masa's.
Last year for Ryan's birthday, we became tourists in SF and spent the night at a B&B. When I was looking into this, I discovered that the prices aren't too bad, especially mid-week. The price per night for quite a few of them was around $100. I don't know of any B&Bs off hand in the areas you mentioned, but it would be worth looking into some possibilities because a number of these are in great old Victorians. Here is the link to the one we stayed in. It was a lot of fun, but it's in the Western Addition, which used to be one of the best neighborhoods in SF! Hence, the great old Vic.:http://www.chateautivoli.com/
My workplace usually puts visitors up in the Harbor Court Hotel because of the great waterfront location. Can take the muni over to Fisherman's Wharf, or transfer to BART to visit Glen Park. I don't know the rate. http://www.harborcourthotel.com/hctourn/index.html
Our folks LOVE the Seal Rock Inn near Ocean Beach. Reasonable rates and beautiful views of the ocean. The Cliff House is just down the block. I call that a lot of excitement!! 415-752-8000 http://www.sealrockinn.com/
When my parents (60-something grandparents from the south) come to visit they always, always, always stay at the Holiday Inn at Fisherman's Wharf. I'm not sure why, but that's where they like to stay. It's right on the corner of Columbus and Bay.
My mother-in-law always stays at the Warwick Regis downtown. She LOVES it and she's a travel agent. And its pretty reasonable for the area.
I have been using DSL for 8+ years, 5 in Glen Park. In Glen Park, I have used Earthlink ($50/month) and it works fine. To keep things simple: - DSL comes in through the phone line (not dial up though) and is always ON. Your distance to the PacBell sub-station impacts the quality of the connection but the quality of service is pretty even. - Cable comes through your cable provider, ie.: Comcast, often as a bundled service. You get better speeds with cable but somewhat less even service since the internet traffic is competing on a cable shared with your neighbors. Expect DSL to be 50+ times faster than dialup and cable 100+ times faster. The real advantage is that with DSL/Cable, you can run your own LAN: - multiple computers on same internet connection - wireless network - shared, wireless printer(s) and that is another experience altogether. I looked into RCN about 1-2 years ago and they did not serve GP. ATT/Pacbell is probably just fine and very easy to get in GP. Note: Earthlink now also offers digital voice over IP, letting you place long distance calls over the net for free (I think). So check out bundled services. Hope this helps. (Fossier)
We have Comcast, which is pricey (it's broadband) but works reliably. We tried Earthlink DSL for a while, and it never really worked well; we kept getting different stories about different problems ("you're too far from the hub to get the full speed promised," "there must be some impediment on the line.") We had to go back and forth between the phone company, Earthlink, and our alarm company (for some reason installing VOIP internet phone service at the same time we went with Earthlink's internet service knocked out our alarm--a known possible problem which they didn't mention until =after= we'd subscribed). I know other people who have been very happy with Earthlink; they just didn't work well for us.(Robins)
i've found that cable is generally less of a pain to configure and > get running than DSL. you plug in the cable modem, then you plug >that into your PC or into your wifi router if you want. > > in general, cable speeds are comparable to DSL but can be less > consistent - cable is affected more by capacity-sharing than is DSL. > > in our house, we pay Comcast for basic cable + hi speed internet> ($60 for both, per month) and we run Vonage phone service over our> internet connection (an additional $25/month, but could be $15/month if you make less than 500 minutes of calls per month) and have generally had very good results. we have no contract with SBC >or any of the "Regular" phone companies, and i am happier for it. > >interestingly, Comcast offers a package where they bundle *their* >digital phone service with cable + internet, but it is more >expensive than paying vonage for phone service. go figure.(Fox)
I've generally had good experience with Earthlink DSL... it is extremely rare for the system to be down. It isn't particularly cheap, but it works... I've been with them about 4 years. (Clemens)
I highly recommend Kevin Keaney, 415-722-0073. He helped us with a
major project last year (retaining walls, decking, plantings, grass, etc.) and
we were thrilled with the results and with his professionalism.
I used my own opthamologist, Dr. Lillie Mossadegh, for the surgery just two and a half weeks ago. I love the results I have from the surgery, I had 20/20 vision within 24 hours of the surgery. My only complaint is that her office(s) are always running late. It wasn't uncommon to be sitting in the waiting room for up to an hour for my appointment. She is a very busy (and popular) doctor and her staff seems to overbook her. But other than that, she is a great surgeon, very thorough with explanations and testing done before the surgery and called me at home for the next two days to check in. I only wish she could be more punctual, but that is the only thing that I didn't like about my doctor. Below is the summary.

Years ago I worked for VISX, the company that came first to market with an opthalmic refractive surgical laser. I was crunching lots of the clinical data ahead of FDA approval and the one thing at the time that was clear around outcomes were
1) Having a good set of pupil dilation measurements ahead of the surgery were correlated with very good outcomes
2) And there was a band of refractions for which the procedure was very effective (if you are too nearsighted or "not nearsighted enough???" youroutcome was not going to be as good.
These are ancient data points, that was 1995, but I'd suggest asking your opthamologist who is proposing to do the surgery about the latest data on successful outcomes as it relates to halo (an after effect if the sculpted area of the cornea is smaller than the pupil at its widest normal dilation), dryness and "spots." Find out if the taking pupil measurements in varying light conditions is still common or if the technology has simply improved.
I highly recommend the Eye Clinic at UCSF. They have done a lot of primary research on laser eye surgery and you are getting the best equipment and most recently trained doctors. They also are very neutral in their consultations (as opposed to trying to sell you on using their services) since their business does not depend on you getting surgery.

Note on Cole Hardware referrals: I have had ok experience w/ Cole's referral service, but I'm shocked that they pay 5% to Cole for referring them. I like getting direct referrals from other homeowners. And a friend in real estate, who uses a lot of repairs people. (Clemens)

One of the keys to choosing a roofer is to pick a company that has been in business for a long time. This is not a place to cut corners. Excelsior has a very good reputation, but is quite expensive. I've used Standard Roofing to replace the roofs on both my previous house and my current house. They are not cheap either, but a bit less expensive, and seem to have done a solid job. Best of luck.(Kustner)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Fuji apple trees. But there are 2 people on our street that had the trees planted by Urban Forest. and they definitely make apples. good luck
I have what I think is a gala apple tree in my yard that does very well.I planted it 3-4years ago then trim and water every now and again. My neighbor has one in the front that does well, too. I don't know the variety though. Here is a blurb on Pollination - which is how apples are produced. Since we have those great bees in the park and already at least a few apple trees. You should be fine. Pollination of Apple Trees Pollination is the method by which apple blossom receives pollen from another variety and goes on to produce an apple. Ignoring much of the advice in many gardening books, magazines and television programs, many gardeners successfully grow a single apple tree in their gardens. Why do they succeed - the answer is the very mobile bee. Bees will fly literally miles to find the best source of pollen and in this way, a single apple tree can easily be pollinated by an apple tree a mile or more away.
We have a plum tree in our backyard; well not really in our back yard, it's in the neighbor's yard but enough of the branches hang over the fence for us to have some too. Also, my mom, who also lives in GP, has a dwarf apple tree that puts out fruit every year. Her problem is the raccoons (or some kind of animals) that come steal the fruit just as it's getting ripe.
We live in Sunnyside, and on our daily neighborhood walks have discovered many many houses here have lemon trees (even a few grapefruit) as well as fruit-bearing apple trees. For our 5th anniversary last year we bought two heirloom apple trees (it was the wood gift!). They are just starting to bud for the first time. I think it's too late to plant new trees now; they are traditionally planted in winter. We ordered them from this wonderful place in Paso Robles: <http://www.treesofantiquity.com/> They also have all kinds of other fruit trees. Their website has lots of good information about planting and care.
we have successfully grown oranges. It has taken 7 years though! We planted our tree when we moved in, and this is the first year that we have had a bountiful crop. We have a kumquat tree too, but haven't seen any fruit yet. Although that tree is only 3 years old.
There's a guy on our street who had two apple trees planted in front of his house (I think by Friends of the Urban Forest). He gets about 100 small apples every year, although I don't know if they're tasty.
I have a Gravenstein I planted about 12 years ago... it generally bears well. There are two healthy Friends of the Urban Forest apple trees on the 200 block of Surrey. I bet they can tell you what type grow well in various SF neighborhoods.
This probably won't be overly helpful since I have limited information, but we have an apple tree in our backyard that produces some pretty good apples. The tree came with the house, so I don't know what kind they are--small and green--and we don't do anything special to the tree besides water it and prune it back every now and then. So I think apples can do very well in Glen Park...let me know if you need any other information or if you would like to come look at the tree--maybe you will know what kind it is! (Stacey G.)
