CHECK IT OUT AT THE LIBRARY–DIY opportunities

July 19, 2023 by Darren Heiber, Branch Manager, Glen Park Library

Calling all sewists, crafters, and conservationists! Glen Park Branch Library is kicking off monthly clothes mending circles starting Sunday, August 6th from 2-4pm. In our first session we’ll help you learn to patch or embroider your jeans and other clothes. These monthly get togethers will return on Sunday, September 17th, when we’ll practice darning for sock repair. These are participatory, skill-sharing workshops, and we welcome all abilities . Bring your well-loved clothes to learn how to refresh them.

Is clothing repair or conservation a passion of yours? We’d love for you to join us regularly to share your expertise and help your community renew our clothes and reduce waste. If you are interested in helping with either of these programs, or have supplies you’d like to see if we can use, please send us an email at gpamgr@sfpl.org.

These community-led DIY workshops are just one of several crafty circles we currently host at the library. Our knitting circles meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 1:00-2:30. Bring your own knitting, crochet, weaving or fiber-art project to share and work on in an inclusive group. Although no formal instructor is present, circle members are always willing to help get you started or figure out a vexing task.

Every 2nd and 4th Friday, from 1:30-5:00 we invite to you drop in for our watercolor social hours. As with the knitting circles , there’s no formal instruction provided, but group members are happy to help you practice your craft. And we’ll provide some materials to get you started, thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.

Looking for other ways to reduce waste in your household? Join us for our monthly themed 2nd Sunday Swaps. Our next swap is Sunday, August 13th from 2:00-3:00 where you’ll get to renew your youth’s school clothes with a K-5th grade clothing swap. Bring any gently-used children’s clothing, accessories and shoes for students entering kindergarten to fifth grades. Items should be stain-free, in good condition and require little to no repair. Please bring your own bags. Leftover clothing will be donated. Look forward to a cookbook swap on Sunday, September 10th.

Have recommendations for the 2nd Sunday Swaps, clothing repair circles, or other programs and events you’d like to see at your library? Please get in touch at gpamgr@sfpl.org
