CHECK IT OUT AT THE LIBRARY–Make a Date With Your Library This Month!

February 6, 2024 by Darren Heiber, Branch Manager, Glen Park Library

February is here, and Glen Park Library is buzzing with an array of new events to warm your heart. From informative sessions for adults to engaging activities for tweens, teens, and families, there’s something for everyone. Here are just a few new and notable February events we’d love to see you at! Visit our website to see a full listing of events, or stop by to pick up a print version, and make a date with your library this month.

For Adults:

Organizing Critical Information and Documents

Wednesday, February 14, 1:00 – 2:00

Join San Francisco Village member and retired lawyer Susan Pollack for a conversation about organizing and sharing information about one’s estate and other critical documents – both for oneself and for those who will have to deal with it. We’ll talk about all the kinds of information you want to consider, such as: important contact details, estate and health care documents, property arrangements, where to find things, accounts to stop/monitor/pay, insurance, automobiles, etc.

Rather than legal advice and how to fill out a will, trust, or health care directive, we’ll be focusing on how to think about the types of information and documents you should have, who you want to share it with, and the necessary conversations to have with people you’ve chosen.

Otomo – Presented by 2nd Floor Flix

Monday, February 26, 1:00 – 2:30

A thought-provoking film exploring institutionalized racism and police brutality. Dive into the world of refugees through this powerful portrayal. NR, 81 mins., 1999. In German with English closed captions.

What’s the Big Deal About Murals?

Wednesday, February 28, 6:00 – 7:30

Murals have become synonymous with San Francisco’s Mission District. This talk sheds light on the history of murals, their emergence in the Mission, and highlights individual murals so you can understand their symbolism and how they’re an emotional map of the neighborhood.

This presentation is a mini version of the Mission Murals tour which Renee Berger, project leader for the Burnside Mural+, offers as part of San Francisco City Guides.

For Tweens & Teens:

Middle Grade Graphic Novel Book Club for ages 8–12

Monday, February 12, 4:30 – 5:30

Discuss the captivating Leon the Extraordinary by Jamar Nicholas. Snacks provided.

Tween Graphic Novel Book Club for ages 11–14

Monday, February 26, 2:00 – 4:00

Dive into Batter Royale by Liesl Adams and join a low-key discussion with snacks.

For Youth & Families:

Make Your Own Seed Balls

Saturday, February 10, 3:00 – 4:00

Get ready for spring by creating California poppy seed balls. Suitable for ages 6 and older.

Pre-Soccer Skillbuilding with Super Soccer Stars

Monday, February 12, 10:30 – 11:00 (ages 1-2); 11:00-11:30 (ages 2-3)

Super Soccer Stars coaches and puppet friends lead toddlers through a world of exciting physical activity. Reservations required.

Ohlone Game with Ranger Fatima

Friday, February 16, 1:00 – 2:00

Learn to make and play the Ohlone game Staves and discover Indigenous plants in San Francisco with Ranger Fatima.

Junior Readers Book Club for ages 6–8

Saturday, February 24, 3:00 – 4:00

Join other budding readers to share your favorite books and discover new ones at our very first event!

Did you know that the library hosts Family Dance Parties from 9-10 some Monday mornings? We didn’t let the power outage along Diamond Street deter us from having a blast. In fact, the natural lighting and rainy weather made the party even better and may have contributed to our largest party yet, with 65 participants over the course of the hour. One intrepid family even used the low light to create an impromptu shadow puppet experience using the in-library pop-up books.

Don’t miss out on the fantastic community happenings lined up at your library this February. Mark your calendars, gather your friends and family, and make the most of the enriching experiences awaiting you. See you here!
