For the literarily-minded: Haruki Murakami’s magnum opus 1Q84 at Bird & Beckett

October 24, 2011 by Elizabeth Weise

Tomorrow, Tuesday, is the day! We open at the ungodly early hour of 11 a.m. so that you can be the second on your block to have your own copy of the English translation of Haruki Murakami’s magnum opus, entitled 1Q84. (If you can’t wait ’til then, some bookshops are putting them on sale 11 hours earlier, at midnight.) Call to reserve a copy if you’re worried about it selling out. Hard to know about such things, so a reserve call is not an unreasonable thing to make! Call us at 415-586-3733!

1Q84 came out in Japan in 2009 in three volumes and has been released in Chinese, Korean and Spanish already. Us poor English readers have had to wait, but the wait is now (virtually) over. Read it now and relish the strange and inventive mind of one of the premier novelists of our time.

There more than a few other hotly anticipated novels freshly out just now:
Michael Ondaatje’s The Cat’s Table
Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Marriage Plot
Neal Stephenson’s Reamde
Amitav Ghosh’s River of Smoke
Charles Frazier’s Nightwoods
Colson Whitehead’s Zone One
all new in hardcover.

In paperback, another of Irene Nemirovsky’s brilliant novels of France between the two World Wars (All Our Worldly Goods) has been unearthed and Ry Cooder has a collection out called Los Angeles Stories. Also, Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom is now in paperback, as is Paul Auster’s Sunset Park and Kate Atkinson’s Started Early, Took My Dog.

And those are just on the fiction side. Notable new non-fiction releases include the new Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson and Fear and Loathing at Rolling Stone: The Essential Writings of Hunter S. Thompson plus Jerusalem: The Biography by Simon Sebag Montefiore and Venice: Pure City by Peter Ackroyd. Also, the terrific writer Tony Horwitz has a new one, Midnight Rising about John Brown & the Harper’s Ferry raid.

And so much more! Come browse awhile!

In a couple of weeks (Sun., Nov. 13), come hear a pair of local novelists in the flesh — neighborhood guy Barry Willdorf with his award-winning historical novel, Flight of the Sorceress and young writer Brian Krans with his out-of-control summer camp tale Freeze Tag on the Highway.”

This Sunday, Oct. 30, Tango No. 9 performs on the Bird & Beckett stage, preceded by Walker Brents riffing on the Persian epic, the Shahnameh! Reggae band Heartical Roots plays the Sunday after… etc., etc., etc.

Check the website! http://www.birdbeckett.com

Thanks! See you around the neighborhood!
