Glen Canyon TRAILS construction progress update

April 1, 2015 by Elizabeth Weise

Glen Canyon TRAILS construction progress update
Dear Neighbors and Folks Interested in Glen Canyon TRAILS Improvement Project,
Please see construction update below.
These updates will also appear on the blog of our project page (http://sfrecpark.org/project/glen-canyon-urban-trails-project/) by April 1 or April 2.
General Construction Timeline
·         We anticipate that the Glen Canyon TRAILS Improvement Project will be completed by late April/ early May latest and will send updates on opening celebration as soon as we have details.  Thank you for your patience as we dealt with some challenging weather and technical engineering difficulties.
Wayfinding and Interpretive Signage
·         New TRAILS signage, mounted in sign frames to match other completed Trails Project sites includes the following
o   Posts at key intersections with small way finding placards with new trail names and distances to rec center/ Portola/ Christopher Playground
o   New map/ entrance signs (4) near key entrances
o   New interpretive signs along trails
§  Islais Creek (2)
§  Grassland Community
§  Coastal Scrub
§  History
Entry, parking and trail between Bosworth and Silver Tree
·         Retaining walls and guardrail just south of Silver Tree completed
·         New trail reroute and small retaining wall at trail fork
·         New ADA parking stall and entry at Bosworth in progress (see construction drawing attached)
·         New improved/ delineated trail corridor between Silver Tree and creek: contractor to install log edging uphill of trail week of 4/6
·         Contractor finalizing special trail stabilization that makes this our ADA outdoor accessible trail

  <image007.jpg>  <image009.jpg>

New safer, more sustainable trail on the steep part of the east slope of the Canyon
·         2 new sets of “stringer steps” connected by a landing
·         New box steps
·         Neighbors may have noticed a black plastic tube installed temporarily from this construction site down to Alms Road.  The Contractor was using this as a “chute” for collecting and repurposing rock excavated for the steps to reinforce the trail and provide good drainage between Bosworth and Silver Tree
·         There is also one more small retaining wall being installed toward the back of the Canyon this week

Creeks to Peaks Connection on SFUSD Property between Glen Canyon and Twin Peaks:
Phase 1:
Design connector trail alignment and clear rough path from the bridge on RPD property up to Portola Ave: COMPLETED
Phase 2:
Host V-O-Cal volunteer event: this is a large scale trail building volunteer group that will camp in the canyon and work on trail projects over the weekend of July 18-19. This event should complete most of the trail bed/corridor finish work.  Neighbors and folks interested in participating in that event can find more information and register (as we get closer to July) at www.v-o-cal.org.
Phase 3:
Contractor will install box steps on the steep section of the trail (close to Portola Ave) and install signage: Fall/Winter 2015 (this is separate from the current contract work for the Glen Canyon TRAILS Improvement Project as it is not on RPD property)

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Melinda Stockmann

In March 2024 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission removed 11 trees from four acres on the north side of O’Shaughnessy, just beyond where the last block of Bosworth makes a right turn. The eucalyptus trees were planted more than 100 years ago and were at risk of falling. Furthermore, access is needed for firefighters in case of wildfire in the area of Glen Canyon Park.
SFPUC was replacing the trees on December 9 with California native plants, which will attract birds, insects, and pollinators. “The goal is to extend the riparian corridor around Islais Creek in the canyon using native plants to create a fire break that also nurtures local fauna,” wrote Heather World in The Glen Park News when the plan was first announced.
Glen Park neighbors were invited to join in on Tuesday, December 9, 9:15am–12:30pm, for a volunteer workday.
