Glen Park Greenway: Join the Work Party Saturday Dec 4!

November 29, 2021 by Nicholas Dewar, Greenway Project

Hello Friend and Supporter of the Greenway,

I hope that you are enjoying the afterglow of Thanksgiving. We are making plans for December’s monthly work party. It will be next Saturday December 4 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. We’ll have coffee at the start (many thanks to Canyon Market for providing this) and sandwiches at the end. I do hope that you can join us.

We’ll meet at the end of the Chilton Ave cul-de-sac (near 88 Chilton). Just follow the aroma of freshly brewed coffee! See you there at 9:00AM.

If you’re planning to come to the work party please send me an email at greenway@glenparkassociation.org and let me know no later than next Wednesday, December 1 so that we know how many sandwiches to order.

Here’s a description of the main tasks that we’ll do:

  • Weed the area of the new Native Meadow. This is the first step in realizing our new Native Meadow Project! The recent rain (and some irrigation during September and October) have encouraged any seeds in the soil to sprout. Now we need to remove the existing weedy grasses so that, when we plant the native grasses in a couple of months, the native grasses will be able to establish themselves with less competition. The best tools for this will be garden hand forks
  • Cut the ivy that is growing over shrubs and up the trunks of trees. The best tools for this will be loppers and small shears
  • Collect trash The Greenway gets plenty of trash tossed down from the Bosworth sidewalk. If you find cleaning up the landscape to be a satisfying pursuit, we’ve got a trash-picker for you!

If you have your own tools, please bring them. If you don’t have tools we have tools that you can borrow – just come to the top of the
pedestrian ramp where Chilton Avenue meets Bosworth St. My red Subaru will be parked there at 9:00AM on Saturday morning with
tools that you can use.

For more information about the tasks or to discuss which tools we expect that you’ll need, please email me at greenway@glenparkassociation.org

We need to follow San Francisco’s current rules in response to the pandemic. We will be working in the open air so generally need not
wear masks. However, please bring a mask with you and, if you need to work closely with any other volunteers and they feel more
comfortable wearing a mask, please wear yours too.

I hope that you’ll be able to join the Work Party and look forward to working with you on Saturday December 4.

Many thanks for all that you do for the Greenway

Saturday’s Glen Park Greenway Work Party is Cancelled.

“I’m very sorry to say that
we have cancelled our Work Party for this Saturday July 12, along with all organized volunteer activity on the Greenway until further notice.
As you may have read in the news, our fiscal sponsor, San Francisco Parks Alliance (SFPA), has shut itself down. Just as SFPA has shut itself down, the Greenway, as an organized part of SFPA, has also been “shut down.” We are busy looking for a suitable alternative fiscal sponsor that is willing to replace SFPA. That search is going well but it is a slow process. We had hoped to find temporary ways to enable the Greenway project to function responsibly as a community activity without a fiscal sponsor. Sadly, despite our best efforts and the help of many others in Glen Park, we have failed. That is why we must cancel our Saturday Work Party and discontinue future work parties and other organized volunteer activity on the Greenway (like weeding and watering) until further notice. We recognize that the Greenway is public open space and that the organizers of the Greenway project have no control over the activities of you or of anyone else on the Greenway. However, if you do venture onto the Greenway to satisfy your urge for outdoor recreation, please be aware that your activity is not in any way organized or sanctioned by the organizers of the Glen Park Greenway project. I’m well aware of the efforts that many of the
Greenway’s supporters are making to get the Greenway organized with a new fiscal sponsor and I’m confident that this will be arranged within weeks or perhaps a few months.
However long it takes, I will contact you with news of our progress.
Many thanks for all that you do for the Greenway.”

Wonder what’s stopping just organizing it separate from that non-profit. It seems like the volunteers largely come from Glen Park.
