Join in the Hunt for Acorns!

September 11, 2020 by Mary Szczepanik

Want to collect acorns in real life and not just on Animal Crossing? Join Glen Park neighbors in gathering acorns to be sown in the Glen Park Greenway later this year. Some details:

  • Most of the oak trees grow on rough ground – sometimes steeply sloping which makes this is a job for people who are fairly agile.
  • The higher up you can reach, the more acorns you can gather. So this won’t be much fun for small children, but tall children accompanied by an adult may enjoy it.
  • Some of the oaks we gather acorns from are in Noe Valley but most are in the California Oak Woodland in Golden Gate Park near the Fulton/Stanyan St corner. You will need to be able to get to these locations.
  • You’ll need to be available for a small group introductory session the week of  September 21.
The normal social-distancing/mask-wearing rules apply to this effort so it will not be a large Work-Party. Instead, we’ll schedule some small groups (each with 3-4 people) to learn where to find the acorns and how to collect acorns that are most likely to produce healthy trees. After a small-group session you will be able to continue the task by yourself for the rest of the brief acorn season.

Email Nicholas Dewar if you are interested or with any questions.
