Local designer creates “We’ve got you covered!” sign for businesses

April 21, 2020 by Elizabeth Weise

Madee Hatfield, an employee at Glen Park Hardware who’s been designing signs for local businesses.

As of Friday night midnight, San Franciscans are required to wear face coverings when they go into grocery stores, medical offices and other essential businesses — including hardware stores.

Madee Hatfield, who’s been working at Glen Park Hardware for the last nine months, realized there was a need and quickly worked up a sign for neighborhood businesses.

The 22-year-old advertising major had talked to Marion Dalere of Dalere’s Beauty Salon across from the hardware store about the new city rules requiring masks.

“Marion emailed me some stuff about Mayor Breed’s announcement, but there wasn’t any pdf or anything to go with it,” Hatfield said. “So I said, ‘You know what, Marion? I’ll just make you up an original design.’”

She quickly put together the eye-catching design, which reads “I protect you. You protect me. Covering your face is now required to enter essential businesses. Please cover your face before entering! We’ve got you covered!”

“I started doing them just for the hardware store and then I printed some up for Tony at Critter Fritters and then the Cheese Boutique,” she said.

“She’s been a great help to us merchants,” said Dalere. While her shop is closed as non-essential, she’s been assisting fellow merchants by bringing them signs as the rules change and keeping them up to date. “I’m trying to stay busy,” the ever-helpful Dalere said.
