Progress report on Diamond/Bosworth intersection

August 14, 2018 by SFMTA

(Note:The Glen Park Association has received this information from Sustainable Streets Director Tom Maguire.)

Below is a short summary of what we have currently done at the intersection to date and what our next steps will be.

Summary of Changes

Signal timing changed on 7/18/2018
o Improves pedestrian safety by removing conflict between southbound left turns and
pedestrians crossing
o Provides 14 second dedicated southbound left turn arrow
o Installation of a RED left turn arrow
o Vehicle clearance phase for Bosworth right turn was removed Upcoming signal timing change planned
o Reallocate some time from southbound Diamond to northbound to reduce northbound
queuing
o Restore the vehicle clearance phase for Bosworth right turn

Next Steps

MTA staff will examine potential for adding leading pedestrian interval (LPI) for Bosworth – LPls provide pedestrians with a head start in crossing the street before the traffic signal changes for cars going in the same direction. This “head start” has been removed on account of the need to balance the time also needed to provide throughput for automobile traffic. MTA staff will report back to the group during the Fall of 2018 on the viability of adding back the “head start” / LPI.

MTA staff will continue to fine tune the signal as needed, but will hold off on any finalized changes until an analysis can be completed during the regular school year – MTA staff will report back to the group during Fall 2018.

PCOS (officers currently out at the intersection during peak hours) will continue to be present at the intersection through August 16th, after which they will be reassigned to other parts of the city. What we’ve heard from them since the changes have been implemented is that new signal adjustments work very well and PCOs are no longer needed. We’d like to keep them there for an additional week and see if they pick up any additional observations.
