Join us as we kick-off our first meeting of 2018 with a brief summary of some of the GPNHP accomplishments for 2017, followed by a timely presentation by Sunnyside resident Amy O’Hair entitled, “Greyhounds, West Campus, and Waterless Basins: History of the Balboa Reservoir, 1894-1984!”
Afterwards, we will welcome John Blackburn, “the earthquake shack guy,” of the Bernal History Project as hhe presents, “Shaken But Not Stirred: The History of San Francisco’s Earthquake and Cottages!”
Ever wonder how our City responded to the 1906 earthquake and fire? How workers were housed, their families kept safe in stable housing while San Francisco got a solid footing to rebuild after this catastrophic event? “Earthquake shack camps” occupied many of our City parks, some of which have been turned into million dollar homes in various neighborhoods around the City. Can you imagine living a “tiny house” lifestyle and what it would be like to leave the comfort of your home for 140 square feet, a community kitchen with food ration tickets and a camp latrine in San Francisco’s climate?as he presents one of the most relevant and charmingly historical pieces of our City’s history – these adorable little earthquake shacks/cottages that forever left their mark on, and changed the way we think about, housing in San Francisco. They set a new tone in housing design and utilization that continues today in the “tiny house” and homeless housing movements. Smaller can be better …
