Sushi in the ‘hood – Tataki opens in Sel & Vin space

December 14, 2011 by Elizabeth Weise

By Gail Bensinger

Got a yen for sushi?

Tataki Canyon, Glen Park’s newest restaurant opened Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 678 Chenery St., the space most recently occupied by Sel & Vin.

Hours are 5-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 5-10:30 Friday and Saturday; and 5-9:30 p.m. Sunday. During a happy hour from 5 to 7 each evening, a limited menu of cut rolls ($4.50), hand rolls ($3) or fried calamari ($5), washed down with sake, beer and an appealing-but-lethal sounding cocktail called Kin-San-Gria, which combines sake and Riesling with fresh fruit ($5).

The regular menu offers starters, soups and salad, sashimi and house specialties, called Tataki, that combine fresh fish matched with unusual seasonings. There are familiar rolls (tuna, California) and specialty rolls with names like Extinguisher (spicy albacore, avocado, habanero masago and spicy aioli) or Russian Roulette (crawfish, cucumber, asparagus, scallops and a shot of Nigori sake). There a couple of dishes for meat eaters, and a complete menu of vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Aside from the larger sashimi and nigiri plates, nothing on the menu exceeds $15. Wine, beer and sake are available.

The interior has been redecorated, with a bar along the back wall, wood tables and chairs, and new lighting. The friendly manager is Dana Moore. The owners are Ken Lui, Kenny Zhu and Raymond Ho, who also operate the original Tataki, at California and Divisadero, and Tataki South, on Church Street near Day.
