This week at Bird & Beckett

June 30, 2011 by Elizabeth Weise

Ok, it’s the 30th… let’s start here…

Tonight, June 30th, 7 pm, poet Neeli Cherkovski discusses zen buddhism, poetics & politics with Gary Gach, noted writer & practitioner of same… all in the course of a celebratory reading of Neeli’s new volume of poems called From the Middle Woods.  Good detail on our website, http://www.birdbeckett.com.

Now, then, about that 4th!
How about the 1st through the 5th we celebrate with music and a big sale?
(And how about we take the 4th off to go picnic or somesuch?)

25% (that’s one-fourth) off every fourth book when you buy four or more books at one time between the first and the fifth.
Does that work for you?

And that’s 25% off the most expensive of the four; not the least expensive!

So buy that $200 boxed pair of Matisse hardcovers – Jazz & Cut-Outs – for $150 when you buy it along with three little mass market paperbacks or whatever you like…  buy eight books and take one-fourth off the price of the two most expensive ones… et cetera et cetera ad nauseum!

(on books priced over $200, whaddya say we restrict that discount to 10%, ok?)

Oh, and on that Matisse set?  We’ll count that as one book even though there are two in the box, eh?

Now, you and we know that saving money is not the only, and certainly not the best way to celebrate independence day!  It’s just a little something we’ll offer.

The best way to celebrate is to, well, celebrate!  Eat & drink well & be nice to folks who can use a hand & come hear some live music & go out and walk at the seashore!  Go surfing & do cartwheels if you’re able!

And I did say, hear some live music!  You can hear some here!

LIVE MUSIC:  Friday, July 1st from 5:30 ’til 8:00 pm, we’re proud to throw another little jazz party here in the bookshop with Don Prell’s SeaBop Ensemble providing the live jazz!  Jerry Logas is on saxes, clarinet & flute — Michael Parsons is on piano — and Chris Bjorkbom is on drums… this is a happenin’ way to start the weekend.  Get some of it!

LIVE MUSIC DEUX:  Viva la france!  ‘Cause they love le jazz hot! And that’s what we got!  And they gave us the Statue of Liberty, too, non?   On Sunday from 4:30 to 6:30, seven musicians will jam our little stage, raisin’ the roof the way it was done in Chicagoan Eddie Condon’s NYC club in the 40s — jazz music rooted in the New Orleans music of the early 1900s, when Louis Armstrong was in kneepants!  It’s a celebration of traditional jazz, and of Pops, Sydney Bechet, Omer Simeon, Kid Ory, Jack Teagarden, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Buddy Bolden, Bix Beiderbeck, Jimmy Noone, Big Sid Catlett & all the cats from Congo Square to Storyville to Lincoln Gardens in the Windy City to the Dawn Club down on Annie Street!  It’s the Buena Vista Jazz Band, with Chris Bradley, Don Neely, John Hunt, Duncan James, Larry O’Leno, Mike Kenny & Steve Apple.  Tell your friends who dig trad jazz & get ’em out here!  4 :30 to 6:30 pm on Sunday, July 3rd!

Come a bit early (3 pm same day — Sunday, July 3rd) for some completely different energy, too, when the anarchic duo of Nicholas Karavatos (famed locally for his poem contributed to the scrappy little anthology called Punk Rock Saved My Ass) and Jeff Kelley jam through some totally improvised spoken word/elaborately processed electronica guitar explorations.  Now, THAT’S freedom!  Viva la revolucion!

So, don’t forget– zen & nature & the political nexus tonight at 7 (Cherkovski/Gach);
intermedia spoken word improv sunday at 3 (Karavatos/Gach);
and trad jazz to the max sunday at 4:30 (Buena Vista Jazz Band).

PLUS, BIG SALE THE FIRST THROUGH THE FIFTH – 1/4TH OFF EVERY FOURTH BOOK!

Oh yeah, and here’s a toast to the weather — it feels like summer out there today!  Let’s hope it holds!

Much love & all due respect,

Eric, Prop.

We’re in San Francisco’s Glen Park neighborhood — a nice walk from Glen Canyon and 1-1/2 blocks from Glen Park BART station.  With easy access by MUNI lines 23, 36, 44, 52, J-Church.  Not to mention the Monterey Blvd. exit off I280 North (hook to the right at the end of the off-ramp, then bear left), the Bosworth exit off I280 South (take three rights to circle back under the freeway), and the Wilder St. exit off San Jose Blvd. coming south from the Mission District.  From Marin, turn right off 19th Av. at Sloat & good luck!

Hell, give us a call and we’ll probably come get you!  Well, maybe.

DON’T FORGET, WE’RE CLOSED ON THE FOURTH!

Do us a favor & forward this email to a friend.

If you want off this train, send us an email & just say “Unsubscribe!”  (the thing below about clicking through doesn’t work so hot)

Thanks!
