Glen Parkers, and indeed all of San Francisco, were awakened at 5:51am by a screeching emergency alert on their devices. We were being warned about a possible tornado, something we’re used to hearing about in Midwestern flyover country but not here. By 6:15am the shelter in place was called off, no tornado had materialized. But high winds and rain wreaked havoc in Glen Park and around the city.
Carolyn White, a resident of Arlington Street, gave the following account. “San Jose Avenue northbound was closed for several hours from St. Mary’s to to Randall due to tree debris. At Arlington between Charles and Randall, several large branches blocked the street and fell onto cars. Across the Bernal Cut large branches blocked the Bernal path near the swing.”
Heather World, reporter for the Glen Park News, gave this account: “San Jose Avenue was closed to traffic, and SFPD traffic officers were routing vehicles onto Mission St. Several large trees long the first block of Arlington had come down, and a front loader was corralling mountains of branches into a dump truck parked in the intersection. From 11am, if not earlier, Randall was closed to traffic between San Jose Avenue and Chenery.”
