Feedback on MUNI Service Cuts

February 14, 2025 by San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency

Due to a $50 million budget shortfall, we likely have to make cuts to Muni service this summer. We suggested three potential approaches to our Board of Directors at our Feb. 4 meeting. We received feedback from both our Board and the public.

Now, we want to hear from you and other Muni riders across the city. This way, we can do our best to create a proposal that balances the needs of different communities.

How to share your feedback

To understand the three approaches we’re considering, you can review our multilingual summer 2025 Muni service cuts webpage. You can either:

  • Read our section explaining the three approaches and routes that could be impacted

OR:

  • Watch an in-depth explainer video with subtitle options in English, Chinese, Spanish and Filipino

To weigh in on the different approaches by our Feb. 25 deadline, you can:

  • Fill out our multilingual online feedback form
    • Language options include English, Chinese, Spanish and Filipino
    • If you need language assistance to fill out the form, you can call 415-646-2005 or email MuniCuts@SFMTA.com
  • Provide feedback via email at mailto:MuniCuts@SFMTA.com
  • Share feedback by calling 415-646-2005

What to expect
We’ll be collecting input on potential service cuts until Feb. 25. We will take the feedback we have received and work to develop a draft service plan for summer that is as minimally disruptive as possible.

Starting March 3, we will share this draft proposal for service cuts at our summer 2025 Muni service cuts webpage and collect more feedback. We will use this input to create a final proposal for summer service. We expect to present this final proposal for approval to our Board on March 18.

The final proposal may look like one of the three approaches outlined at summer 2025 Muni service cuts webpage or it may be a combination. It could even include new elements. The final proposal will be available for review and comment on the service cuts webpage prior to the March 18 meeting, where the SFMTA Board will consider our service proposal. We expect to implement the service cuts in summer 2025.

Why do we expect to cut Muni service this summer?
No one wants to cut Muni service. However, we’re facing a $50 million budget shortfall. This is due to parking revenue, General Fund reimbursements and state operating grants that are lower than we’d expected.

Beginning in July 2025, we won’t be able to afford to replace transit operators, maintenance or cleaning staff. We’ve cut spending, increased transit fare enforcement, become more efficient and paused most hiring. But it’s still not enough to close the funding gap. You can learn more about our financial challenges and our steps to become more efficient on our financial crisis webpage.
