Glen Park business achieves legacy status

May 14, 2022 by Bonnee Waldstein (contributor: Andrew Sokolsky)

In a sign of neighborhood support for our local businesses, Glen Park Chiropractic has been named a San Francisco Legacy Business. This designation means that a business has operated in San Francisco for 30 years or more, had no break in operations for more than two years, and has contributed to San Francisco’s history or identity.

Dr. Andrew Sokolsky opened his chiropractic office at 2 Monterey Boulevard in Glen Park in 1987.

His expertise allows him to provide relief from discomfort and pain, get the spine to function optimally, and maintain spinal health. He is a specialist in Activator Chiropractic, which uses an instrument that allows chiropractors to provide a quick, low-force impulse at specific points. Dr. Sokolsky is also an auto accident specialist.

He joins another Legacy Business, Dalere’s Beauty Salon, operated by Marian Dalere, which has been in business in Glen Park since 1968. In 2018, Mayor London Breed visited the business to honor it on its 50th anniversary. The Glen Park News’ Murray Schneider reported on the event.

Dr. Sokolsky gathered his thoughts about the process of becoming a Legacy Business and his many years in operation. He writes:

Fellow business owners,

Being named a Legacy Business is an honor, and a testimony to being in business for over 30 years. As you know, time goes quickly, and too infrequently as small business owners are we celebrated for all our hard work, long hours, and sometimes too little financial compensation. Few others appreciate what it takes to keep a small business going, and yet to me, we’re the lifeblood of our city. There may be some perks to being a Legacy Business, including benefits for both you and your landlord, if you have a lease. At present, I am not aware of any other benefits, other than bragging rights, although there may be some.

Recently I went to Yellow Submarine in the Inner Sunset on 6th and Irving for lunch. The same family has operated the business for 47 years. I told them about the Legacy Business Program, but they had never heard of it. The same woman at Yellow Submarine, Juliet, made my meatball sandwich last week, as she did when I ate there more than forty years ago. I was thrilled to see her! For dinner I went to Mai’s Vietnamese Restaurant on Clement and 5th. The same couple has run the restaurant since 1979, when I started eating there. For me, these types of businesses keep our city vibrant!

Of course, I patronize as many businesses in Glen Park as possible. Dalere’s Salon and Higher Grounds have been there many more years than me. I honor all your hard work and dedication, whether you’ve been in business for four weeks or forty years! I also thank all the residents of Glen Park!

The people of Glen Park congratulate Dr. Sokolsky and thank him for his service to the community.
