Glen Park Greenway News

January 22, 2023 by Nicholas Dewar, Greenway Project

Hello Friends and Supporters of the Greenway,

We are making plans for our February Work Party. It’ll be on Saturday February 4; a few days after Imbolc. Imbolc is probably the Holiday that you never heard of, but it’s all about the sudden speed-up of the rate that days lengthen after we pass the mid-point between the solstice and the equinox. The rains gave the plants a big boost in December and January, and in February the increasing amount of daylight gives them a second boost as they start to prepare for spring with flower buds and even more leaves. So Imbolc is a big day if you’re a plant(!) and, if you’re an admirer of all things green, I hope that you will come and enjoy it with us on the Greenway.

Our February Work Party will be on Saturday, February 4 from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

We’ll have coffee at the start (many thanks to Canyon Market for providing this) and sandwiches at the end. I do hope that you can join us. We’ll meet where the Greenway meets Brompton Avenue (the nearest house is 40 Brompton Ave). Just follow the aroma of freshly brewed coffee! See you there at 9:00am.

If you’re planning to come to the work party please send me an email to tell me that you’re coming so that we know how many sandwiches to order.

Here’s a description of the main tasks that we’ll do at our Work Party:

  • Weed the Native Meadow. This is the major task for February. The invasive Oxalis grows very aggressively at this time of year. A small group of wonderfully dedicated volunteers has been keeping it at bay since the turn of the year. They need reinforcements!
  • Plant a small number of Coffeeberries in the Native Meadow
  • Pick up garbage. There’s always garbage to pick up!

The basic tools that we’ll use will be trowels, hand forks and small hand shears (“clippers”). If you have your own tools, please bring them. If you don’t have tools we will have tools that you can borrow.

For more information about the tasks or to discuss which tools we expect that you’ll need, please email

greenway@glenparkassociation.org

What if it rains? If it’s no more than a light drizzle we’ll dress appropriately and enjoy the damp weather! But if, on Wednesday, the weather forecast predicts an unpleasantly heavy rain we’ll reschedule the Work Party to Saturday afternoon, or Sunday depending on when the forecast predicts a few reasonably dry hours. So, please email me to tell me if you’d like to join the Work Party, and, if we have to change the time of the Party, I’ll send you an update on Wednesday evening.

I hope that you’ll be able to join the Work Party and look forward to working with you on Saturday February 4.

Many thanks for all that you do for the Greenway!

In March 2024 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission removed 11 trees from four acres on the north side of O’Shaughnessy, just beyond where the last block of Bosworth makes a right turn. The eucalyptus trees were planted more than 100 years ago and were at risk of falling. Furthermore, access is needed for firefighters in case of wildfire in the area of Glen Canyon Park.
SFPUC was replacing the trees on December 9 with California native plants, which will attract birds, insects, and pollinators. “The goal is to extend the riparian corridor around Islais Creek in the canyon using native plants to create a fire break that also nurtures local fauna,” wrote Heather World in The Glen Park News when the plan was first announced.
Glen Park neighbors were invited to join in on Tuesday, December 9, 9:15am–12:30pm, for a volunteer workday.
