Good Samaritan chases down iPhone thief at BART

October 18, 2010 by Elizabeth Weise

from a neighbor –

Today (Oct 16 – afternoon) I helped chased down a man from the Bart Station to Bosworth St.

I got off at Glen Park Bart station and made my way to the escalator to go home. Then someone brushed against my arm as he was running up. I had my headphones on, and heard a girls voice behind me. I heard her scream in the back as I took off my headphones, “STOP HIM, HE HAS MY IPHONE”. My reaction was to just turn around and started chasing him without thinking how big this guy is. I started to scream “STOP…STOP….SOMEONE STOP HIM” as I was sprinting up the escalator, jumping multiple steps at a time. He hopped over the guard rails and the bart agent just stood up and watch.

The bart agent and I was walking down on Bosworth St (we were on opposite side of the street) going towards Twin Peaks. I think the agent turned on Lippard going towards Chenery St. I thought I might see the thief further down the block, so I turned on Chilton St and walked towards Chenery St. He was no where to be found. I started my way back from Chenery to Bosworth and back to the BART station. As I was turning I saw him down the block walking back to Bosworth as well. He was like a block away (really short blocks), so he didn’t see me.

I dialed the non-emergency police number and reported that he was waiting for the 44 O’Shaughnessy. As the bus arrived, I was still on the phone with the operator giving her the bus number and description of the guy. She told me the police was already on their way and to flag them down if I see them. Lo and behold, a police car was right behind the bus (15 seconds after the bus left). I flagged the police car down, and told them about the 44 bus and thief. Once I told the police, I went back to the Glen Park Bart station. I gave a statement and pointed him out from a distance.

The  girl got her 4G iPhone back. The male thief was handcuffed and arrested.
