Greenway Work Party–Saturday, March 4

February 25, 2023 by Nicholas Dewar, Greenway Project

Hello Friend and Supporter of the Greenway,

We are making plans for our March Work Party. Please put it on your calendar: it’ll be on Saturday March 4. This will be our last Work Party before the start of spring, and the plants along the Greenway are really getting going now. There’s lots of growth in the Native Meadow to be admired – and also plenty of weeds to remove. As for our oaks: March is the month when our oaks put on 90% of their annual vertical growth. So it’s an important month for the Greenway. I hope that you’ll come and enjoy it with us.

Our March Work Party will be on Saturday, March 4 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. We’ll have coffee at the start (many thanks to Canyon Market for providing this) and at noon we’ll have sandwiches generously sponsored by Jamie Ennis Real Estate. I do hope that you can join us. We’ll meet at the top of the Chilton Avenue cul-de-sac (the nearest house is 88 Chilton Ave). Just follow the aroma of freshly brewed coffee! See you there at 9:00am.

If you’re planning to come to the work party please send me an email to tell me that you’re coming so that we know how many sandwiches to order.

Here’s a description of the main tasks that we’ll do at our Work Party:

  • Weed the Native Meadow. Our volunteers did a magnificent job suppressing the Oxalis on the Native Meadow during January and February. Of course, Oxalis is very persistent so we still need to keep removing it as it pops up
  • Plant 14 Coffeeberries in the Native Meadow
  • Replace the mulch around the direct-seeded oak trees
  • Prune the shoots from the stumps of trees removed in 2017
  • Pick up garbage. There’s always garbage to pick up!

The basic tools that we’ll use will be trowels, hand forks and small hand shears (“clippers”) and long-handled shears (“loppers”). If you have your own tools, please bring them. If you don’t have tools we will have tools that you can borrow.

For more information about the tasks or to discuss which tools we expect that you’ll need, please email me at:

greenway@glenparkassociation.org

It is unlikely to rain, but we never know how lucky we may be! If it’s no more than a light drizzle we’ll dress appropriately and enjoy the damp weather! But if, on Wednesday, the weather forecast predicts an unpleasantly heavy rain we’ll reschedule the Work Party to Saturday afternoon, or Sunday depending on when the forecast predicts a few reasonably dry hours. So, please email me to tell me if you’d like to join the Work Party, and, if we have to change the time of the Party, I’ll send you an update on Wednesday evening.

I hope that you’ll be able to join the Work Party and look forward to working with you on Saturday March 4.

Many thanks for all that you do for the Greenway.
