O’Shaughnessy Blvd. work finishes early

October 19, 2017 by Heather World

Updated Saturday October 21, 5:00 PM

Public Works contractor crews wrapped up hillside stabilization work adjacent to O’Shaughnessy Boulevard a day-plus ahead of schedule. Roadway back open.

Thursday October 19, 2017

Project Description

In January 2017 a rock slide forced a brief closure of O’Shaughnessy Boulevard. Geotechnical engineers and geologists were brought in to assess the undeveloped hillside for potential rockslides and recommended that loose rocks near the top be knocked away in a controlled manner. Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru declared an emergency to allow the necessary work to begin right away.

Public Works will perform a more permanent repair in spring 2018. However, during site analysis and ongoing design of the permanent repair, our engineering team has determined there’s a chance a large boulder could slide down the hill if it isn’t removed before the winter rains.

The continued threat of a rockslide onto O’Shaughnessy Boulevard will necessitate the temporary closure of the roadway beginning 7 AM Saturday, October 21, 2017 through 7 PM Sunday, October 22, 2017.

Public Works has contracted with Soil Engineering Construction, Inc. to perform this phase of the technical hillside work.

Public Works is working closely with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which oversees traffic and transit operations in the City, to minimize disruptions to the public during this essential public safety project.

Impacts and Restrictions

O’Shaughnessy Boulevard will be closed to through traffic from Portola Drive to Bosworth Street starting Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 7 AM, through Sunday October 22, 2017 at 7 PM.

O’Shaughnessy Boulevard will be temporarily off limits to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Local access will be retained from Portola Drive to Del Vale Avenue and from Bosworth Street to Malta Court.

Muni’s No. 44-O’Shaughnessy, will be detoured. Please call 311 for additional information on the Muni detour. See the attached flyer for complete information. Thank you.
