Public art at Glen Canyon Rec Center: The proposals

As some of you may know, all public capital projects like the upcoming renovation of the Glen Canyon Recreation center, include a public art component.

We have been working with the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Department of Public Works work with their artists to develop an artwork that will highlight the aspects of the park that you told us were important to you in the process.  Most of you mentioned in the survey we passed out that Glen Canyon Park’s rich natural and/or cultural history were important aspects for them to consider. We provided this information to the artists.

The three finalist’s preliminary proposals may now be viewed on the web and in person at the Recreation Center.

Here is the link to where they can be seen online:

http://www.sfartscommission. org/pubartcollection/featured/ 2014/06/03/artwork-proposals- for-glen-park-canyon/

In person, they may also be viewed inside the hallway at the Glen Canyon Park recreation center from June 4th to June 16th.  These finalists – Mark Brest van Kempen, John Roloff, and Chris Sollars – were selected by the Public Art Selection Panel to create proposals for the park.  More details about the selection process can be found on the web.

Please take a few moments to view the proposals, either in the comfort of your own home or in person, and provide us your comments.  A link to the comment form can be found on the web, along with the proposals.

Please provide your comments to Zoe Taleporos at the Arts Commission, atzoe.taleporos@sfgov.org, or 25 Van Ness Avenue, Suite 345, by June 16 at 5 pm.  Your responses will be summarized and shared with the Selection Panel for this project.

The winning proposal will be selected at the Final Selection Panel meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, June 18th, from 10 am to 2 pm at 25 Van Ness, Suite 70.  The public is welcome to attend.

If you have any questions, please contact me at karen.mauney-brodek@sfgov.org or (415) 575-5601.

Thanks,

Karen

Congratulations to Sunnyside Elementary School for being awarded with a Glen Park Association Community Grant!
With that grant they were able to print a copy of The Ray for every student and staff at Sunnyside. The Ray, the school’s art and literary journal has been in publication for 17+ years.
🎥 This year’s theme is FILM, and students wrote scripts, designed movie posters, and painted Hollywood stars.
⭐️Glen Park Library, 2825 Diamond Street, features STARS made by Kindergarten classes, depicting their own Hollywood Walk of Fame.

See this and other student artwork from The Ray around Glen Park throughout the summer!
Visit @bello.coffee.sf and @thestrandsalon.sf for more art from Sunnyside Elementary!
