Sort & Fold event to help the homeless this Saturday 9/22

September 20, 2018 by Betsy Eddy

Message from Nelson Barry, founder of Urban Angels SF:
This Saturday (9/22) from 4 pm to 7 pm we are having our last Sort & Fold Pot Luck before next Tuesday’s Lava Mae Pop Up Care Village (PUCV). The sorting and folding will be from 4 pm to 4:45 pm at Urban Angels SF office (Nelson Barry’s law office, 5228 Diamond Heights Blvd, SF 94131 – in the Diamond Heights Shopping Center, above Walgreens and around the back of the building; we look down on the front door of the Bank of America and the veterinarian’s office.

Please call or text Nelson at 415-952-0711 to let him know you are coming. Feel free to bring a friend too.

At 4:45 pm we will enjoy some good food and drink until about 5:30 pm. This is a pot luck so feel free to bring an appetizer, a hot dish, a desert or something to drink (alcoholic or not is fine) for 3 or 4 people. Bringing food or drink is not required since we always have enough.

Our Sort and Fold Pot Luck is where volunteers come together to sort and fold donated clothes that we distribute directly into the hands of the men and women who are living on the streets of San Francisco at the next PUCV. We have these Sort and Fold Pot Lucks about every three weeks (whenever the amount of clothing in the UASF office gets a bit overwhelming). Then our volunteers take the clothing to our storage facility until we retrieve it for the next PUCV.

Lava Mae hosts its PUCV on the last Tuesday of every other month from 10 am to 2 pm outside the SF main library in Civic Center and that is where we, Urban Angels SF, hand out the donated clothing that we have collected in the two month interim since the last PUCV. At the PUCV on July 24, 346 unhoused men and women were able to collect clothes, get haircuts, counseling, medical treatment, legal services and hot food.

At 5:3O pm on Sept. 22nd, we will view a special documentary called “Happy”. Here is a link to the trailer. https://vimeo.com/11335940

The film explains in an uplifting way what true happiness is and how we can experience it based on scientific research.

Urban Angels SF is a nonprofit charity that collects and donates lightly used and clean clothing into the hands of people living on the streets of SF. UASF volunteers also deliver hot burritos and bottled water to these men and women as well as sharing with them information that is helpful to getting them the assistance they need (medical care, shelter, jobs, etc) to help them transition to permanent housing.
