We can now report that action is underway to improve street lighting in the neighborhood. After a nighttime walk last December with the Glen Park Lighting Committee and Supervisor Weiner and other city officials (which was reported in the Spring 2014 Glen Park News), an action plan has been developed.
Details were presented at the last Glen Park Association meeting by Raul Mosuela of the SF PUC Power Enterprise; and Mary Tienken, Project Manager with the PUC. The PUC, along with PG&E, are responsible for maintaining the City’s inventory of streetlights.
Remedies for the dark areas that had been identified include: adding new poles for streetlights, increasing the wattage on existing streetlights where needed, and trimming trees which obstruct the streetlights. Twelve “Scopes,” or areas of Glen Park, which need lighting improvement, have been plotted out, and add up to 18 different lighting issues. They encompass Sussex and Diamond Streets on the north; Chenery and Roanoke Streets on the east; Bosworth and Arlington Streets on the south; and Mizpah and Chenery Streets on the west.
Service orders were submitted in early February for eleven out of the twelve scopes. The last one, at the Bosworth Street underpass, will be included in a 2014-2015-project list, which is separately funded.
There was a positive reaction to the plan at the meeting. Unlike some other neighborhood issues, there was agreement that more lighting in Glen Park is a good thing.
Mary Tienken told the group about the LED conversion project in the City, which will include commercial districts. In Glen Park, we can expect to see the sodium lights replaced with LEDs in the Bosworth-Chenery-San Jose area in about nine months.
