Update on City efforts to slow traffic on San Jose Avenue

August 30, 2014 by Elizabeth Weise

Dear Neighbors

Thank you for your continued interest in the SFMTA’s work to reduce speeds and improve safety on San Jose Avenue. Below is an update on the Northbound San Jose Avenue & I-280 Off-Ramp Road Diet Pilot Project which has been in the ground for almost three months. The first official evaluation period for this project is scheduled for the second week of September. That data, when compared with data collected at the same locations last January, will give provide a quantitative assessment of the pilot project thus far and we look forward to sharing that data with you in the next few weeks.

Thank you to all the neighbors and commuters who have sent feedback about the pilot project so far – we have received many positive comments about increased safety and comfort for people walking and biking in the area, however there have been reports of increased congestion approaching Randall St, and increased traffic and speeding on St. Mary’s Ave. To investigate these reports further, MTA staff observed traffic on San Jose Ave on August 13 during both the AM and PM peak periods.

To find out more about initial on-site observations and to add your feedback about the San Jose project, please view our San Jose Avenue Pilot Project update: https://www.sfmta.com/news/ project-updates/pilot-project- survey-and-update.

The San Jose project team will send you another update in October with data from the official traffic counts and the date of our next community meeting at the end of the year.

Sincerely,

Neal Patel
