There was an exciting spectacle happening at the Glen Park Rec Center when the SF Rec & Park Department (SFRPD) faced off against the Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP), based in Berkeley, in a wheelchair basketball tournament. There were four teams in total. The RPD team is the aptly named Rolling Fog.
The wheelchairs are specially designed for basketball. Nevertheless, it’s amazing to see the athletes dribbling the ball while propelling their wheelchairs forward–and the near misses!

It’s the first tournament and hopefully it will be an annual event. Drop-in wheelchair basketball is available to watch every Saturday.
Glen Park Recreation Center is the only site in SF Rec & Park system that has wheelchair basketball, for now. It was formerly headquartered at the SOMA Rec Center, but for the last two years or so the facilities at Glen Canyon Park have been used due to its excellent accessibility features while the SOMA site is undergoing major renovations. It’s unclear if Glen Park will continue to offer the sport once the work is completed at SOMA.
The tournament lasted from 10am until 5pm. “Our” team won two games. The BORP All Stars beat the South Bay Sonics in the championship game.
