Art Walk Oct 7 in GP

September 27, 2023 by Heather World

Come see businesses become art galleries, crosswalks convert to concert venues and pavement recast as playground October 7, when Art Walk SF comes to Glen Park from noon to 5 p.m.!

Subsidized by the City and organizations like Avenue Greenlight, the event sites visual artists in neighborhood shops and businesses, which in turn offer discounts on their wares. On the streets and sidewalks, community organizations set up tables side by side with artist booths, and music hotspots are dotted in between. Since April, thousands of people have flocked to the monthly celebrations, held in neighborhoods across the city.

Glen Park author and children’s librarian holds her book “Just Like You”

The Glen Park Association is proud to host a Storytime for Children with Glen Park children’s author Meredith Steiner at 2 p.m. Kids are invited to sprawl on the carpet at our booth to listen as Steiner, the children’s librarian at the West Portal branch of the San Francisco Public Library, reads from books, including her own Just. Like. You., a rhyming story celebrating diversity.

The Glen Canyon Recreation Center will bring the park to the proceedings by featuring a (safe!) archery range and chalk art. The Glen Park branch of the SFPL will host a Tiny Art Show and children’s crafts tables inside. Outside, St. John’s School will showcase its own student art and host a Tinkering Station for young builders and Buddy Bridge Day Care will also host a crafts table.

More than 40 artists will participate, including several neighborhood artists. Glen Park photographers include Michael Waldstein (whose photos often grace the blog) and J. John Priola, a longtime organizer of work parties on the Bosworth median. Glen Park painters include Konrad Dunton, Millie Kwong (see her Glen Park gallery here!), Adriana Maritza, Isabel Limosnero, Louise Diskerud, sophia lee and Jeel Shah.

DJ Cocoa Leche will keep the music playing on the mainstage, which will feature the Cromagnatones at 12:30 p.m., the Bayonics at 2 p.m., and the Portrero Hillbillies at 4. But the music doesn’t stop there. Bird & Beckett Books and Records will host a band, and there will be DJs at Critter Fritters and the Strand. Not to be outdone, Sobo will also feature outdoor amplified music. (South of Bosworth, yo!)

Ten percent discounts cross the Bosworth divide, from the price of nail services at Mina Spa or a meal at One Waan Thai or Banh Mi Viet to the south, to the price of gifts at Perch, treats at Bello Coffee and Tea, and Chinese food at Win Garden to the north. Critter Fritters is offering 10 percent off store-wide, with 25 percent off all toys, all to the beat of DJ-curated music.

Community organizations including the Glen Park Association, BernalCut.org, Upper Noe Neighbors, the Glen Park Neighborhood History Project, and Refuse Refuse will have tables full of information. Stop by and say “hi”!
Festival volunteers are needed. Interested? Please email Fredi Lopez at artwalksf@gmail.com.
Please note that Diamond between Bosworth and Chenery streets, Kern Street and a part of Wilder Street will be closed to traffic, and buses will be re-routed.

In March 2024 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission removed 11 trees from four acres on the north side of O’Shaughnessy, just beyond where the last block of Bosworth makes a right turn. The eucalyptus trees were planted more than 100 years ago and were at risk of falling. Furthermore, access is needed for firefighters in case of wildfire in the area of Glen Canyon Park.
SFPUC was replacing the trees on December 9 with California native plants, which will attract birds, insects, and pollinators. “The goal is to extend the riparian corridor around Islais Creek in the canyon using native plants to create a fire break that also nurtures local fauna,” wrote Heather World in The Glen Park News when the plan was first announced.
Glen Park neighbors were invited to join in on Tuesday, December 9, 9:15am–12:30pm, for a volunteer workday.
